The V&A has one of the most important collections of engraved ornament in the world. With funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the museum has embarked on a project to catalogue all 24,000 prints, thereby making them available to visitors and scholars online. The collection spans four centuries with designs for everything from jewellery to tomb-stones. Through this blog we will be revealing some of the highlights.

Den Schwerpunkt des vorliegenden Projekts bilden Ornamentstichvorlagen aus dem 15. bis zum frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Drei anerkannte Fachinstitutionen im Bereich der angewandten Kunst, die Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin – Kunstbibliothek, UPM – Uměleckoprůmyslové museum (Kunstgewerbemuseum) in Prag und das MAK – Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst / Gegenwartskunst in Wien mit ihren bedeutenden Sammlungen an historischen Ornamentstichen haben 2006/07 mit finanzieller Unterstützung der EU im Rahmen des Programms „Kultur 2000“ an diesem Projekt zusammengearbeitet und rund 32.000 Ornamentstiche online (www.ornamentalprints.eu) zugänglich gemacht. Die Stiche wurden für dieses Projekt gescannt, formal erfasst und inhaltlich erschlossen.
In Arbeitstreffen in Berlin, Prag und Wien wurden die Projektrichtlinien, die methodischen und technischen Aspekte festgelegt – seit Ende September 2007 ist das Projekt online verfügbar. Eine Einführung in die Geschichte des Ornamentstichs wird dem Benutzer einen virtuellen Zugang in die Thematik vermitteln und soll vertiefend in die Materie einweisen.
Die Partnerinstitutionen, die sich an dem EU-Projekt „Ornamental prints. Dissemination of Design from the Renaissance to the Biedermeier Period“ beteiligten, begreifen dieses Projekt als Initialzündung im Bereich der Ornamentik. Als langfristige Perspektive dieses Projektes ist der Aufbau eines globalen und leicht zugänglichen Onlinemediums, das zum breitgefächerten Themenbereich der „Ornamentik“ Auskunft gibt und einen weltweiten virtuellen Zugriff auf die drei Ornamentstichsammlungen ermöglicht, geplant.
